The Othello error

Image may contain: 1 personWhen seeking out deception it’s important to remember the ‘Othello error’

This is when a lie catcher fails to consider that a truthful person who is under stress, may be displaying similar behaviors to a deceitful person afraid of being caught.

The term derives from Shakespeare’s play – The tragedy of Othello where Othello wrongly accuses and ultimately kills his wife Desdemona of adultery by mistaking her fear of not being believed when telling the truth, with the fear of being caught when telling a lie. Something commonly referred to as detection apprehension.
